The Ghaziabad Development Authority (GDA) is set to invite public objections before moving ahead with the acquisition of approximately 153 acres of land under the Indirapuram Extension scheme. The move follows a direction from the Allahabad High Court, which instructed the authority to follow due process and compensate affected farmers at up to twice the 2014 circle rate. The notification for land acquisition in Mohiddinpur Kanawani village was issued earlier this week.
The Ghaziabad Development Authority has decided to invite objections from the public before finalising the acquisition of land for the Indirapuram Extension scheme in Mohiddinpur Kanawani village. The authority's decision comes after the Allahabad High Court found that the earlier process had overlooked the step of public consultation.
As per the court's ruling, the GDA is required to pay affected farmers up to twice the 2014 circle rate for nearly 153 acres belonging to 35 farmers. This directive comes as part of the settlement of an 18-year-old land dispute. The initial acquisition notification had been issued in 2004 for about 229 acres, but farmers had resisted the process, seeking higher compensation, as the state had previously acquired land at INR 1,100 per sqm.
A senior GDA official explained that the land-acquisition process involves issuing a notification, inviting public objections, determining compensation, disbursing payments, and taking physical possession. The official noted that the tribunal had observed the GDA skipped the crucial public-objection stage in its previous proceedings.
With the public-objection process reinstated, the GDA is aiming to ensure transparency and adherence to legal requirements in the Indirapuram Extension scheme. This step is expected to address farmers' longstanding concerns regarding compensation and streamline the overall acquisition process, paving the way for a smoother resolution and further development in the region.
