Odisha has announced a combined investment of over INR 46,000 crore to develop a new deep?water port at Bahuda in Ganjam district and a ship building and repair centre at the Mahanadi river mouth near Paradip. The projects include a world class cruise terminal in Puri and are expected to boost trade, tourism, and industry. Paradip Port, central to the state's maritime growth, has expanded cargo capacity from 71 million tonnes in 2015 to 150 million tonnes by 2025, with targets of 300-500 million tonnes under national maritime plans.
Odisha's government has outlined major maritime infrastructure projects with a total investment of INR?46,000?crore. Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi announced plans to construct a new port at Bahuda in Ganjam district at an investment of INR?21,500?crore, in collaboration with the Paradip Port Authority. Simultaneously, a ship?building and repair centre will be developed at the mouth of the Mahanadi river near Paradip for INR?24,700?crore. The state also plans a world?class cruise terminal in Puri as part of coastal development initiatives. The CM highlighted the significant role of Paradip Port, which has increased its cargo-handling capacity from 71?million?tonnes in 2015 to 150?million?tonnes in 2025. Under the Maritime India Vision 2030, Paradip Port is targeted to reach 300?million tonnes annually, eventually scaling up to 500?million tonnes under the Developed India 2047 plan.
The CM added that Odisha's port-based economy is growing in coordination with central government programmes like Sagarmala, Gati Shakti, and the National Logistics Policy. The state is also working on establishing Coastal Economic Zones to support maritime trade and industrial growth.
Alongside these announcements, the CM inaugurated Mayfair Hotels & Resorts in Paradip, featuring 140 rooms, three signature restaurants, and 16,000?sq?ft of event space. Previously, he had announced that Paradip would get a greenfield airport and emerge as a green hydrogen hub.
Paradip Port Authority chairman P.L. Harandha noted that the port has achieved new milestones over the past four years, surpassing the successes of the previous 50 years due to improved operations, skill development, and dedicated workforce efforts. The new projects are expected to complement this growth and strengthen Odisha's position as a key maritime hub.
