Synopsis

The Mumbai International Airport Ltd (MIAL) has announced a temporary suspension of flight operations on November 20 for six hours to carry out its annual post-monsoon maintenance. Both intersecting runways 09/27 and 14/32 will remain closed from 11 am to 5 pm. The airport operator has issued a Notice to Airmen (NOTAM) in advance to help airlines and ground staff adjust flight schedules and operations. The maintenance will include surface repairs, technical inspections, and checks of runway lights, markings, and drainage systems.

The operator of Mumbai's Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport has confirmed that both runways will be shut on November 20 from 11 am to 5 pm for scheduled post-monsoon maintenance work. The planned closure, announced this week, will see both runways 09/27 and 14/32 remain non-operational during the six-hour window.

According to Mumbai International Airport Ltd (MIAL), the maintenance activity is part of its annual safety programme aimed at ensuring runway reliability and compliance with international aviation standards. The operator stated that a Notice to Airmen (NOTAM) has already been issued to all concerned stakeholders so that airlines can revise their flight plans, minimise disruptions, and manage manpower effectively.

The maintenance scope will cover runway surface repairs, inspections of lighting and signage, and checks of markings and drainage systems to maintain optimal operational safety. The airport, which handles close to 950 flight movements daily, is India's second-busiest after Delhi, making regular maintenance essential to avoid long-term disruptions.

In previous years, Mumbai airport has carried out similar post-monsoon maintenance drives to ensure smooth runway performance and address wear and tear caused by heavy rainfall and high flight volumes. The timing of the maintenance scheduled during non-peak hours is aimed at reducing inconvenience to passengers and airlines.

MIAL has also emphasised that this shutdown is a planned preventive measure rather than a response to any urgent technical issue. With the NOTAM issued well in advance, airlines and operators have sufficient time to rework their flight schedules and inform passengers of any rescheduling or minor delays.
