Kolkata-based Titagarh Rail Systems Ltd (TRSL) revealed earlier this week that it had secured a contract valued at INR 2,481 crore from the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) for the design, manufacture, supply, and commissioning of 132 metro coaches and related systems for Mumbai Metro Line 5.
The agreement encompasses not only the rolling stock but also the installation of signalling systems for 24.9 kilometres of track, telecommunication infrastructure across 16 stations, platform screen doors, and depot machinery. It further includes five years of comprehensive maintenance support.
According to the company, the project covers both Phase 1 connecting Kapur Bawdi, Kasheli, and Dhamankar Naka and Phase 2, extending from Dhamankar Naka to Bhiwandi and Kalyan APMC. This order represents TRS's second major engagement for the Mumbai Metro network, following its previous contract for Line 6.
Vice Chairman and Managing Director Umesh Chowdhary remarked that the achievement reflected the company's growing competence in offering complete metro rail solutions. The manufacturing for the project will be undertaken at TRSL's advanced Passenger Rail Systems facility in Uttarpara, near Kolkata.
The latest contract reinforces Titagarh Rail Systems' expanding presence in India's urban rail segment, particularly within the Mumbai Metro network. With the addition of Line 5 to its portfolio, the company continues to demonstrate its technical expertise and operational capabilities in delivering integrated metro solutions. The Uttarpara facility's role in producing these coaches further highlights TRSL's contribution to domestic manufacturing in the country's transport infrastructure sector.
