Synopsis

The Public Works Department (PWD) has appointed AECOM India to prepare the Detailed Project Report (DPR) for the Mahatma Gandhi Road elevated corridor, aiming to ease congestion on one of Delhi's busiest roads. The report, to be completed in about six months, will include 3D models, technical designs, and cost estimates. The plan will also address traffic management, environmental impact, and integration with the Delhi Metro and other transport networks. The project is expected to cut travel time, lower fuel use, and improve air quality.

The Delhi Public Works Department has engaged AECOM India to prepare the Detailed Project Report for the Mahatma Gandhi Road elevated corridor, a project aimed at reducing traffic congestion across major arterial routes in the city. The DPR, expected to be completed in 24 weeks, will feature 3D visual models, detailed engineering designs, and cost assessments. After approval, the construction work will proceed in phases.

PWD Minister Parvesh Sahib Singh Verma stated that the initiative represents the government's focus on creating a smarter, safer, and faster capital city. He mentioned that AECOM's scope of work includes conducting a detailed traffic study, assessing environmental and social impacts, and designing grade separators, underpasses, pedestrian pathways, and advanced signal systems. The consultancy will also ensure smooth integration of the corridor with the Delhi Metro and other forms of public transport to enable better last-mile connectivity.

Stretching around 55 kilometres, the Mahatma Gandhi Road is considered one of Delhi's key transport corridors, linking major residential, industrial, and commercial zones. The proposed elevated corridor is expected to ease vehicular pressure, enhance traffic flow, and significantly reduce travel time for daily commuters. It will also contribute to improved fuel efficiency and lower emissions, supporting Delhi's broader goals of sustainable mobility and cleaner air.

To ensure systematic development, the PWD has divided the project into six phases. The corridor will cover routes from Azadpur Flyover to the DND Flyway and from Moti Bagh to Rajouri Garden, strategically connecting critical hubs across the city. The plan aims to improve road safety, streamline traffic management, and encourage multimodal connectivity through redesigned intersections and better public transport integration.

Verma further mentioned that the goal is not limited to building new infrastructure but to create a transport system that functions more intelligently and efficiently. He noted that every flyover and junction along the stretch would be redesigned to provide citizens with a smoother and safer commuting experience.
