Synopsis

Dutch horticultural company Van der Hoeven Horticultural Projects recently announced that it had secured three contracts totalling around 40 million euros to build advanced greenhouses for strawberry cultivation in India. The projects, spanning 8 hectares across Punjab, Tamil Nadu and Karnataka, will introduce the firm's high-tech systems for climate control, irrigation and automation. The initiative forms part of HortiRoad2India, a Dutch-led public-private partnership promoting sustainable and climate-smart agricultural technologies in India.

Dutch company Van der Hoeven Horticultural Projects announced earlier this week that it had secured three major contracts worth 40 million euros for constructing high-tech greenhouses dedicated to strawberry cultivation in India. According to Sales Manager Pieter Jan Robbemont, the greenhouses would be developed across an 8-hectare area covering Punjab, Tamil Nadu and Karnataka.

Robbemont stated that this marks the company's first venture into the Indian market, where it intends to introduce its advanced greenhouse technology to enhance strawberry production. He mentioned that the firm was awaiting final bank financing before commencing implementation, with construction expected to take at least a year once initiated.

The Dutch firm explained that its technology offers advanced climate control, irrigation, automation and cultivation systems designed to optimise productivity across varying climatic conditions. This approach sets it apart from existing greenhouse systems currently used in India.

Van der Hoeven is among four Dutch firms exploring the Indian market under the HortiRoad2India programme, a long-term public-private partnership spearheaded by the Netherlands to promote Dutch horticultural innovation in India. Tiffany Meijer, project manager for international trade at InnovationQuarter and co-coordinator of HortiRoad2India, remarked that the initiative seeks to strengthen collaboration between Dutch innovation and Indian agricultural ambitions, focusing on inclusive growth, food safety and climate-resilient farming practices.

Earlier this week, HortiRoad2India also unveiled its strategic blueprint aimed at transforming Indian agriculture through Indo-Dutch cooperation. The Netherlands currently operates over 10,000 hectares of high-tech greenhouses, supported by approximately 20 Dutch companies that offer similar advanced technologies worldwide.

Through its greenhouse projects across Punjab, Tamil Nadu and Karnataka, Van der Hoeven Horticultural Projects aims to bring Dutch agricultural innovation into India's strawberry sector. The collaboration under HortiRoad2India represents a significant step towards combining Dutch expertise with India's expanding horticultural potential, fostering more sustainable, efficient and climate-smart farming practices. The initiative is expected to bolster Indo-Dutch ties and contribute to India's broader agricultural modernisation goals.
