The Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) has intensified its anti-encroachment drive across all eight regional offices following complaints of increased unauthorised hawking and traffic disruptions during the festive season. Acting under the directives of Municipal Commissioner Dr Kailas Shinde, the campaign was carried out under the supervision of Additional Commissioner (2) Dr Rahul Gethe and Deputy Commissioner (Encroachment) Dr Kailas Gaikwad. The operation targeted illegal hawkers, unauthorised vehicles, and hoardings, resulting in penalties amounting to INR 7.45 lakh being collected over the past week.
Following the surge of temporary hawkers during the Diwali season, the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation observed a sharp rise in unauthorised vending across roads, footpaths, and lanes, which caused significant inconvenience to citizens. The festive period also saw an increase in the number of two-wheelers and other vehicles on the roads, leading to congestion and traffic issues.
In response, under the instructions of Municipal Commissioner Dr Kailas Shinde and the guidance of Additional Commissioner (2) Dr Rahul Gethe, the Encroachment Department led by Deputy Commissioner Dr Kailas Gaikwad launched a sustained crackdown throughout the past week across all eight regional offices. The campaign focused on illegal hawkers, encroachments on footpaths, unauthorisedly parked vehicles, and unlicensed hoardings and banners.
During the drive, action was taken against 330 shops occupying public spaces without authorisation, 8,488 illegal hawkers, and 14 vehicles parked in restricted areas. Additionally, 1,176 unauthorised hoardings and banners were removed. The civic body collected a total penalty of INR 7.45 lakh as part of this enforcement effort.
As per the commissioner's directive to maintain obstruction-free roads and hawker-free railway station zones, intensive operations were conducted in the Belapur, Nerul, Seawoods, and Koparkhairane station areas in three shifts daily. Alongside, unauthorised stalls, sheds, vehicles, and makeshift huts on main and internal roads were removed in large numbers.
To address traffic congestion in a more permanent manner, a high-level meeting involving municipal officials, traffic police, divisional executive engineers, and the property and encroachment departments has been scheduled for later this week. The meeting aims to coordinate and define parking and no-parking zones across the city.
NMMC authorities reaffirmed their commitment to maintaining Navi Mumbai's reputation as a clean and orderly city. Officials have instructed all assistant commissioners and regional officers to continue sustained enforcement campaigns against encroachments. Going forward, regular drives will be carried out to ensure footpaths and roads remain free from obstructions. The civic body also plans to file cases against individuals or entities involved in erecting unauthorised hoardings, banners, or posters, reinforcing its policy of strict action against violations to preserve the city's urban discipline and visual appeal.
