Synopsis

The Railway Board has given approval for a new railway station near Cochin International Airport at Nedumbassery, marking a key development in Kerala's transport infrastructure. The project aims to ease travel for passengers using the airport and improve last-mile rail connectivity. The plan, first proposed in 2010, had stalled for years but was revived after Union Minister George Kurian's meeting with Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw. The new station will be located between Angamaly and Chowara and is expected to cost around INR 12 crore.

The Railway Board has approved the long-awaited proposal to build a railway station near Cochin International Airport at Nedumbassery in Ernakulam district. The project, which had been pending for over a decade, is aimed at improving accessibility for air travellers and reducing road congestion around the airport area.

Union Minister of State for Railways George Kurian confirmed the approval through his office, stating that this marks an important step toward strengthening the region's transport connectivity. The plan gained traction after his recent meeting with Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, who had earlier inspected the location during his visit to Kerala. Following that visit, the minister instructed officials to complete necessary surveys and prepare a detailed plan for the station.

According to reports, the upcoming railway station will be constructed between Angamaly and Chowara, about 1.5 km from the airport terminal. The project will include two platforms and a passenger amenities building, with the total estimated cost around INR 12 crore. Officials noted that the land required for the project is already available, and preliminary site surveys have been completed. Once operational, major trains including Vande Bharat Express services are expected to halt at the station to provide direct connectivity to the airport.

The idea of linking Cochin International Airport by rail dates back to 2010, when a foundation stone for a similar project was laid but did not move forward. The renewed approval now puts the plan back on track, with construction expected to begin soon and take about two years to complete. Kurian expressed gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Railway Minister Vaishnaw for their support in pushing the project forward.

Cochin International Airport currently handles more than 1.12 crore passengers annually, making it one of India's busiest non-metro airports. The new railway station is expected to reduce travel time and provide a reliable alternative to road transport for passengers heading to and from the airport. Airport authorities have also proposed electric shuttle buses to connect the terminal with the upcoming station once it becomes operational.
