Synopsis

Global shipping major MSC has expressed concern over key operational shortcomings at Kerala's Vizhinjam Port, operated by the Adani Group. Despite the port handling over 1.1 million TEUs since becoming operational in the second half of last year, the company stated that the absence of an ICEGATE electronic gateway forces reliance on manual documentation. MSC also pointed out the lack of immigration facilities, preventing crew members from disembarking. The company further emphasised the need for uniform import-export procedures across Indian ports to ensure smoother logistics operations.

MSC, one of the world's largest shipping lines, has raised operational concerns regarding the functioning of Vizhinjam Port in Kerala. The company's Managing Director in India noted that the port, which has already managed over 1.1 million TEUs of transshipment cargo since its launch, still depends heavily on manual documentation processes due to the unavailability of the ICEGATE electronic customs gateway. This, he said, has led to avoidable procedural delays and reduced efficiency for vessels using the terminal.

In addition, the lack of an immigration department at the port means that crew members arriving on international vessels are unable to go ashore. This limitation has caused inconvenience for seafarers and operational staff, particularly given that Vizhinjam is being positioned as a major international transshipment hub. The company's representative also remarked that import and export documentation procedures across Indian ports and inland container depots (ICDs) are inconsistent, which creates unnecessary complexities in the logistics chain.

Vizhinjam Port, operated by Adani Ports and SEZ Ltd, commenced commercial operations in late 2024 and has seen significant cargo movement since then. The port's strategic location and deep-water capabilities make it an important link in India's maritime ambitions, particularly for transshipment activities. However, MSC's observations underline that while infrastructure development has been impressive, procedural and regulatory systems need to catch up to international standards to maintain efficiency and competitiveness.

At the India Maritime Week event, MSC's managing director also indicated that the company remains optimistic about India's growing maritime sector and intends to work collaboratively with port authorities and policymakers to address these operational issues. He noted that strengthening digital systems and improving coordination across ports would enhance the country's position as a global logistics hub.
