Synopsis

The Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) has collected over INR 500 crore in property tax during the first seven months of the current financial year from nearly 1.63 lakh property holders across its eight divisions. Of this, INR 313.70 crore came through digital modes and INR 186.41 crore through offline payments. The civic body, led by commissioner Dr Kailash Shinde, credited citizen participation, awareness drives, and digital initiatives for the growth and is aiming to cross INR 1,000 crore in total collection this fiscal.

The Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) has achieved a property tax collection of over INR 500.11 crore within the first seven months of the current financial year, spanning April to October. The collection has come from nearly 1.63 lakh property owners spread across the corporation's eight administrative divisions.

Out of the total revenue, INR 313.70 crore was collected through digital payment modes such as online portals, mobile apps, and UPI, while INR 186.41 crore came from traditional offline methods like cheque and cash deposits. The civic administration noted that the growing preference for online payments has simplified transactions and improved efficiency in the collection process.

Municipal commissioner and administrator Dr Kailash Shinde acknowledged the performance of the property tax department and said that the achievement was the result of citizen-friendly measures, awareness initiatives, and the increasing use of digital payment systems. He mentioned that the cooperation of citizens has been crucial in helping the corporation achieve consistent growth in its collections.

The NMMC has now set a target of INR 1,000 crore for the entire financial year. Public relations officer Mahendra Konde confirmed the target and said the administration is confident of meeting it if the present pace continues.

In the previous financial year, the NMMC had collected around INR 826 crore, which was its highest-ever annual collection, though slightly below the INR 900 crore target. Over the past few years, the corporation has introduced several reforms to strengthen revenue generation. These include simplifying the property tax payment system, offering discounts for timely payments, and organizing information campaigns to encourage residents to pay on time.

The civic body has also focused on improving digital platforms for ease of payment and better record management. The online property tax portal allows residents to pay from home and receive instant receipts, while awareness efforts through social media and local outreach have increased participation among property owners. The NMMC's emphasis on transparency and convenience has played a key role in the rising collection figures.

Officials also stated that maintaining this pace would help fund ongoing civic development works and infrastructure upgrades across Navi Mumbai. Property tax is one of the major sources of revenue for the corporation, supporting essential services like road maintenance, water supply, waste management, and urban amenities.
