The Karnataka Chief Secretary chaired a meeting with K-RERA and state police officials to plan coordinated enforcement against non-compliant developers. Under the initiative, police stations will assist in serving recovery notices and executing RERA orders to recover around INR 750 crore in unpaid penalties and compensations. The move addresses long-standing grievances from home-buyers awaiting refunds or possession. A recovery cell had previously been formed under the revenue department, but progress was slow due to procedural delays. Police involvement is expected to streamline enforcement, strengthen regulatory compliance, and send a clear signal that non-adherence to RERA orders will invite strict action, reinforcing transparency in Karnataka's real estate sector.
During a high-level meeting chaired by the chief secretary of Karnataka, officials from K-RERA and senior representatives of the state police deliberated on a coordinated strategy to issue recovery notices to non-compliant developers through jurisdictional police stations. The police department confirmed its willingness to assist in serving such notices and to expedite enforcement actions on behalf of K-RERA.
The collaboration is intended to recover dues amounting to approximately INR 750 crore, representing penalties, compensations, and payments directed under RERA orders that have remained pending for several years. Home-buyers, particularly those affected by delayed or stalled projects, have long criticised the lack of tangible enforcement despite multiple rulings in their favour.
Earlier, the Karnataka government had set up a dedicated recovery cell under the state's revenue department to execute K-RERA orders and to treat the outstanding amounts as land-revenue arrears. However, progress had remained limited due to procedural delays and insufficient inter-departmental coordination. The renewed effort, with police involvement, aims to address those bottlenecks and signal a more assertive stance on compliance.
By bringing law-enforcement agencies directly into the recovery process, the government seeks to send a clear message to errant developers that non-compliance will attract swift consequences. If implemented effectively, the collaboration could streamline the execution of RERA orders, revive stalled consumer claims, and rebuild confidence in the state's real-estate oversight. Moreover, this step underscores the growing resolve among regulators and enforcement bodies to safeguard the interests of home-buyers and ensure greater transparency within Karnataka's property market.
