Synopsis

The Thiruvananthapuram City Corporation has revived the long-delayed Poonkulam housing project, which had been stalled since 2008 due to financial constraints. Originally planned to deliver 120 houses under the BSUP scheme, only two floors were completed at a cost of INR 2.96 crore, with total expenses later estimated at INR 9 crore. The revised plan now targets 32 families, fully funded by the Corporation. Following a structural and stability audit by the College of Engineering, Thiruvananthapuram, a fresh tender will be issued. With an expected completion timeline of 18-24 months, the initiative aims to provide affordable housing and restore confidence in the city's ability to deliver long-pending BSUP projects.

The Thiruvananthapuram City Corporation has resumed efforts to complete the housing project at Poonkulam, which had remained stalled since its inception in 2008 due to financial constraints. Initially, the scheme was intended to deliver 120 houses across six blocks under the BSUP programme. However, only two floors were completed at a cost of around INR 2.96 crore, and the total projected expenditure later rose to nearly INR 9 crore.

The revised plan now targets 32 families, with the Corporation funding the entire project from its own resources. Corporation Secretary Jahamgeer S mentioned that the civic body intends to move ahead promptly once the structural audit is completed and tendering begins.

A stability audit conducted by the College of Engineering, Thiruvananthapuram, assessed whether the existing structures can be retained or need demolition. Based on these findings, the Corporation will soon issue a new tender for completion of the construction.

The renewed plan envisions a completion period of 18 to 24 months once work resumes. The cost will be updated in line with current market conditions and construction standards. The Poonkulam scheme is among several BSUP projects in the city that have faced delays or abandonment, resulting in the loss of around INR 75 crore worth of developments over the years.

The revival of the Poonkulam housing project signifies a major step by the Thiruvananthapuram City Corporation to fulfil its long-pending commitment to provide affordable housing for economically weaker families. With renewed funding, strict auditing, and a revised plan, the Corporation aims to ensure timely delivery and improved quality of life for the selected beneficiaries. If completed as planned, the initiative could restore confidence in the civic body's capacity to deliver other deferred BSUP housing projects across the city.
