Synopsis

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has reset deadlines for several key bridge and flyover projects to improve coordination and ease traffic congestion. The Vidyavihar Flyover will see its eastern side completed by December 2025 and the western section by May 2026, pending relocation of affected residents. Sion Flyover is also scheduled for May 2026, while a delayed foot overbridge there is now due in October 2025. At Mahalaxmi, the city's first cable-stayed rail overbridge is targeted for November 2026. Bellasis Flyover near Mumbai Central has an internal deadline of December 2025. Officials emphasised timely completion to avoid disruptions following past closures of unsafe bridges.

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has drawn up revised deadlines for the city's pending bridge and flyover projects. At a joint review meeting held on Tuesday, Additional Municipal Commissioner (projects) Abhijeet Bangar and Joint Police Commissioner (traffic) Anil Kumbhare directed civic and railway teams to ensure timely completion through better coordination.

The Vidyavihar Flyover across the railway station has been given two phases of deadlines. Work on the eastern side is expected to finish by December 2025, while the western section is planned for May 31, 2026. Officials said this part of the project depends on relocation of Project Affected Persons (PAPs), who are scheduled to be shifted to rehabilitation housing within the next two weeks.

Sion Flyover, linking the eastern and western parts of the suburb, is set for completion by May 31, 2026. A southern-side foot overbridge, which missed its earlier August 2025 deadline, is now targeted for handover by October 31, 2025, following which the old bridge will be dismantled.

At Mahalaxmi, a cable-stayed bridge is under construction over the railway tracks on Keshavrao Khadye Marg. BMC has set November 30, 2026, as the deadline for the bridge and its approach roads. This is the first cable-stayed structure of its kind being built in the city over railway lines.

Bellasis Flyover connecting Tardeo, Nagpada and Mumbai Central, BMC has set an internal goal of December 31, 2025, even though tender conditions extend the deadline until May 2026. The project is being jointly executed with Western Railway, which has already launched 12 girders of 36 metres each and moved into the stages of bracing, deck sheet laying and slab casting.

The civic body has been under pressure to speed up bridge projects after several structural issues in recent years led to closures and demolitions. The Gokhale Bridge in Andheri and the Carnac (now Sindo) Bridge near Masjid Bunder were both rebuilt after safety concerns forced their closure. Officials believe completing the current set of projects within time will help ease traffic flow and prevent further disruption for commuters.
