Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi will inaugurate the final stretch of Mumbai's underground Metro Line 3 from Acharya Atre Chowk in Worli to Cuffe Parade on September 30. On the same day, he will also launch the Navi Mumbai International Airport, a key project aimed at reducing the load on Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport. Metro Line 3, spread across 33.5 km with 27 stations, is the city's first fully underground corridor and a long-delayed project. With its completion, south Mumbai's business hubs will be directly connected to Bandra-Kurla Complex (BKC) and other suburbs, cutting travel time, easing congestion, and offering a faster, cleaner transport option for lakhs of commuters.
Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi is set to inaugurate two of Mumbai's major infrastructure projects on September 30 - the final segment of the underground Metro Line 3 from Acharya Atre Chowk in Worli to Cuffe Parade, and the Navi Mumbai International Airport. The announcement was made by Maharashtra Chief Minister Shri Devendra Fadnavis while addressing a public meeting in Worli.
Metro Line 3, also known as the Colaba-Bandra-SEEPZ corridor, is one of Mumbai's most ambitious metro projects. The 33.5-km line has been built at an estimated cost of over INR 37,000 crore, and features 27 underground stations. Work on the project began in 2016 but faced delays due to land acquisition issues, environmental concerns, and the COVID-19 pandemic.
The line has been commissioned in phases: the Aarey-BKC section opened in October 2024, followed by the BKC-Acharya Atre Chowk stretch on 9th, May 2025. With the final Worli-Cuffe Parade stretch ready, south Mumbai will be directly linked to BKC, the airport, and western suburbs.
The fully underground corridor is expected to transform daily commuting patterns. Travel time from Cuffe Parade to the airport is likely to be reduced to less than 50 minutes, compared to over 90 minutes by road during peak traffic. Metro 3 is also seen as a major step towards decongesting the city's overburdened road and rail networks.
The Navi Mumbai International Airport, which will also be inaugurated on September 30, is expected to significantly ease congestion at Mumbai's existing international airport. Once fully operational, the new airport is designed to handle over 60 million passengers annually, offering much-needed relief to one of the busiest airports in the country.
