Synopsis

Authorities in Panchkula have demolished nearly 100 illegal shops, dhabas, and stalls at Majri Chowk as part of a large anti-encroachment drive led by the Municipal Corporation and Haryana Shahari Vikas Pradhikaran (HSVP). The land, meant for residential use, had never been approved for commercial activity. Officials plan to use the cleared site to rehabilitate families from Gandhi Colony, where many live in slum-like conditions. A survey is underway to identify genuine residents, with around 1,000 structures counted but many found vacant or used for livestock. Eligible families will receive 10-by-10-foot plots, marking a move towards organised housing and improved living standards.

Municipal Corporation and Haryana Shahari Vikas Pradhikaran (HSVP) authorities in Panchkula have carried out a massive anti-encroachment operation at Majri Chowk, demolishing close to 100 illegal structures including shops, dhabas and makeshift stalls. The drive was executed with the support of police personnel and heavy machinery to prevent any disruption. Officials stated that the land belongs to HSVP and the civic body and had never been approved for commercial activity. It was originally meant for residential development and not to be used for unauthorised businesses.

Authorities confirmed that the reclaimed land will now be utilised to rehabilitate residents from Gandhi Colony, where numerous families are living in slum-like conditions. A detailed survey is under way to determine the number of eligible families for the relocation scheme. Preliminary findings have indicated around 1,000 structures within Gandhi Colony, though many are either unoccupied or used to shelter livestock. Officials expect the number of genuinely residing households to be much lower. Each qualifying family is planned to be allotted a 10-by-10-foot plot at the cleared Majri Chowk site.

By removing unauthorised commercial structures, authorities aim to provide a lawful and organised living space for families currently residing in informal settlements. While the process of identifying rightful beneficiaries remains complex, the step indicates a firm intent to improve living conditions and strengthen regulatory compliance in the city's urban landscape.
