Synopsis

Mumbai's civic body will demolish the INR 27 crore Veer Savarkar flyover at Goregaon-opened in 2018-and replace it with a double-deck elevated bridge. Additional Municipal Commissioner Abhijit Bangar confirmed the move, noting that the new structure will better handle both local traffic and regional connectivity. The bridge, part of the Coastal Road 2 project, will directly link the Malad-Mindspace stretch with the Goregaon-Mulund Link Road, easing bottlenecks. Designed with a single-pier system and two traffic decks, it promises smoother flows compared with the current flyover. Citizens have compared the decision to the Gokhale-Barfiwala flyover mismatch of 2022, citing planning lapses.

Mumbai's municipal body has decided to pull down the Veer Savarkar flyover at Goregaon, built at a cost of INR 27 crore, and replace it with a double-deck elevated bridge. The decision was confirmed this week by Additional Municipal Commissioner Abhijit Bangar, who said the project will help manage both local traffic and regional connectivity needs.

The upcoming bridge will form part of the Coastal Road 2 project, designed to connect Versova with Dahisar. It will also provide a direct link between the Coastal Road (North)'s Malad-Mindspace stretch and Goregaon-Mulund Link Road. Unlike the current flyover, the new bridge will be supported on a single pier, with two decks handling different traffic flows.

Built at a cost of 27 crore the flyover runs from Radisson Hotel to Rustomjee Ozone and became operational in 2018. Citizens have also drawn parallels with the Gokhale-Barfiwala flyover mismatch episode in 2022, which led to widespread criticism of planning lapses.
