The Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) carried out demolition drives in Airoli and Koparkhairane after occupants ignored earlier notices against unauthorised constructions. In Airoli, illegal work on three Sector 2 plots by Nitin Vaman Nagral was razed, with officials also collecting a INR 75,000 penalty. In Koparkhairane, partial demolition was undertaken at House No. 366, owned by Hemchandra Dhondiram Mhatre, along with a INR 15,000 fine. Both operations, supervised by senior civic officials and supported by police, used heavy equipment and labour teams. The civic body has warned that similar anti-encroachment actions will intensify, aiming to enforce planning laws and curb unauthorised development.
The Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation's encroachment department undertook demolition drives in Airoli and Koparkhairane under the directives of municipal commissioner Dr Kailas Shinde, with additional commissioner (2) Dr Rahul Gethe and deputy commissioner (encroachment) Dr Kailas Gaikwad overseeing the operations. The actions were prompted as the individuals concerned failed to comply with demolition notices issued earlier.
In the Airoli area, under the jurisdiction of the G-Division office, unauthorised construction was being carried out by Nitin Vaman Nagral at plots E-189, E-190, and E-191 in Sector 2. Notices had been issued to him under Sections 53 (1A) and 54 of the Maharashtra Regional and Town Planning Act, 1966, requiring voluntary removal of the unauthorised work. However, as the construction continued, the encroachment department proceeded with the demolition under the supervision of assistant commissioner and divisional officer of Airoli, Sunil Kathole. A penalty of INR 75,000 was also collected from the person responsible. The drive involved encroachment department officials and staff, six labourers, two breakers, one gas cutter and police deployment.
Meanwhile, in the Koparkhairane area, unauthorised construction at House No. 366 in Koparkhairane village by Hemchandra Dhondiram Mhatre had been served a notice under Section 54 of the Maharashtra Regional and Town Planning Act, 1966. As the individual failed to comply, partial demolition was carried out and a penalty of INR 15,000 was recovered. The demolition drive was led by assistant commissioner Bharat U Dhandhe and junior engineer Chandrakant Dhotre, supported by other municipal staff, police security, eight labourers, three electronic hammers, one pickup van and two gas cutters.
The civic body has stated that similar anti-encroachment actions will be intensified going forward.
The strict action, coupled with monetary penalties, aimed to deter further violations while ensuring compliance with planning regulations. Officials have also emphasised that such anti-encroachment campaigns will be carried out more aggressively in the future to maintain order and uphold civic development norms.
