Synopsis

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) will restart work on 574 partially completed roads from October 1, prioritising stretches in South Mumbai, Bandra, Santacruz, Kandivli, Charkop, Khetwadi, and Tejpal Road in D Ward. The civic body will also review 776 proposed roads under tender evaluation. Nearly 25 roads have been removed from plans due to narrow widths or local opposition, with some resurfaced in asphalt. A public dashboard will provide zonewise and wardwise progress, ongoing updates, and expected timelines. The mega concretisation programme spans 2,121 roads across two phases, covering around 609 kilometres.

As Mumbai enters the final phase of the monsoon, the BMC will resume its large-scale road concretisation project from October 1. The focus will be first on 574 roads that were partially completed before rains, with efforts scheduled over the first two weeks to finish these stretches.

The roads include Tali Mala Road and John Baptist Road in Bandra, Nehru Road and Hasanabad Lane in Santacruz, Parekh Lane in Kandivli, Charkop 16th Road, 43rd Road, Khetwadi, and Tejpal Road in D Ward. In addition, arterial roads proposed in the 2022-23 tender and other roads under tender evaluation will also be taken up for construction.

Around 25 roads have been removed from the plan due to narrow widths that made full concretisation impractical or opposition from residents. In these cases, the civic body plans to resurface roads with asphalt. Earlier, objections by locals, such as on Auxilium Convent Road in Bandra West, had forced the BMC to halt plans, showing the body's willingness to respond to citizen concerns.

To improve transparency, the BMC has launched a public dashboard providing detailed updates on road concretisation. The dashboard shows zonewise and wardwise progress, highlighting completed, ongoing, and pending works. It also provides estimated timelines for each road, allowing residents to track progress across the city.

The two-phase concretisation programme covers 2,121 roads across approximately 609 kilometres. As of May 31, 2,135 stretches covering 342.74 km had been taken up, with around 49% of the works completed. The foundation stone for the project was laid in 2023 by Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi, and the 500 km plan for 2022-25 was formally released in February 2025.

In South Mumbai, progress has been slower than in the western suburbs due to contractor-related issues. The BMC plans to stagger work to reduce public inconvenience while completing partially finished roads and initiating new projects.

Additional Municipal Commissioner Abhijit Bangar said that the first priority will be roads in advanced stages halted by monsoon, alongside some newly proposed roads under tender evaluation. He highlighted that citizen objections are taken into account when planning, ensuring public concerns guide execution.
