Synopsis

Final safety checks have begun on the first phase of Mumbai Metro Line 2B, with the Commissioner of Metro Railway Safety inspecting a 5.39 km stretch from Mandale to Diamond Garden. Covering five stations-Mandale, Mankhurd, BSNL, Shivaji Chowk, and Diamond Garden-the review will clear the way for passenger operations by late September, subject to compliance. Trial runs have already been completed, and the depot is ready for operations. The remaining 18.2 km stretch up to D N Nagar is 88% complete, with operations expected in early 2026. Once fully functional, the 23.6 km Yellow Line will serve 20 stations and carry over one million passengers daily.

The final safety check for the first phase of Metro Line 2B began this week under the supervision of the Commissioner of Metro Railway Safety (CMRS), the statutory authority under the Ministry of Civil Aviation responsible for ensuring the safety of metro systems across India. The inspection covers a 5.39 km elevated corridor running from Mandale to Diamond Garden in the eastern suburbs.

Officials from the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA), the implementing agency for Metro 2B, indicated that passenger operations could start by the end of September, depending on the CMRS report. The inspection will review all safety measures, including track, signaling, and rolling stock systems. After the initial review, any corrective measures will be addressed before a final compliance report is submitted.

This phase includes five stations: Mandale, Mankhurd, BSNL, Shivaji Chowk, and Diamond Garden. Trial runs have already been conducted on this stretch in recent months, allowing authorities to test system readiness and operational safety.

The remaining section of Metro 2B, stretching from Diamond Garden to D N Nagar in Andheri, is reported to be approximately 88% complete. Once track work is finished, station interiors, electrical systems, and other installations will be finalised before commercial operations begin, expected in early 2026. The depot for this corridor is already prepared to handle train maintenance and operations.

Metro 2B is part of a 23.6 km Yellow Line connecting Mandale to D N Nagar, with a total of 20 stations. Once fully operational, the line is expected to significantly reduce road congestion in the eastern suburbs and carry over one million passengers daily.

The CMRS had previously conducted an inspection of this corridor a few months ago. This second check ensures that any gaps noted earlier are addressed and that all safety standards are fully met before opening to the public.
