Nagpur Municipal Corporation is set to launch a housing project under the Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar Awas Yojana, providing 392 two-bedroom flats of 500 sq. ft. each for sanitation workers at Mauja Nari. The INR 93 crore initiative has received DPR approval, with bhoomipuja expected soon. Alongside housing, the state has introduced reforms allowing educated children of sanitation workers to pursue jobs beyond sanitation roles. A COVID-19 memorial will also honor workers who lost their lives during the pandemic. Efforts are underway to regularize 4,407 sanitation workers before Diwali, supported by a new facial recognition attendance system to enhance monitoring.
The Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) is preparing to launch a housing project under the Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar Awas Yojana, aimed at providing dignified homes for sanitation workers. In the first phase, 392 two-bedroom flats of 500 sq. ft. each will be built at Mauja Nari. The total project cost is estimated at INR 93 crore, and the detailed project report has already been approved. According to sources, the Chief Minister is expected to perform the bhoomipuja soon.
In line with efforts to improve opportunities for the next generation, a 2023 government resolution now allows educated children of sanitation workers to secure jobs based on their qualifications, instead of being limited to sanitation work.
Other measures include the construction of a COVID-19 memorial in Nagpur to honor sanitation workers who lost their lives during the pandemic. Additionally, the long-standing issue of 4,407 sanitation workers waiting for permanent status is expected to be resolved soon, with approvals anticipated before Diwali. A new attendance system will replace smartwatches with facial recognition technology to better monitor worker attendance.
NMC Commissioner Abhijeet Chaudhari was recognized for reducing pending cases of sanitation workers from over 1,000 to under 200. Dagor mentioned that civic bodies in other cities, such as Navi Mumbai and Pune, can serve as benchmarks, while several others still lag in implementing state guidelines for worker welfare.
