Vedanta is advancing plans to establish a new aluminium smelter in Dhenkanal, Odisha, with a production capacity of three million tonnes per annum, aiming to double its total aluminium output. The company is actively acquiring land for the project, which could generate over two lakh jobs. Vedanta is also expanding its billet capacity and developing an aluminium park in Jharsuguda to attract downstream manufacturers. These steps are part of a long-term strategy to strengthen the company's domestic and export footprint in the aluminium sector, aligning with rising industrial demand and supporting regional economic growth.
Vedanta is in the process of acquiring land for a new aluminium smelter in Dhenkanal, Odisha, which will have a capacity of three million tonnes per annum, Rajiv Kumar, Chief Executive Officer of Vedanta's Aluminium business, said. The company's current aluminium capacity stands at three million tonnes, and the new project aims to double this to six million tonnes. Land acquisition for the smelter is actively underway, and progress is reportedly moving well.
Kumar added that the greenfield smelter could create more than two lakh jobs once operational. He noted that aluminium production is a capital-intensive business, and setting up a facility of this scale typically takes three to four years. Vedanta also produces billets, a key raw material for the extrusion industry, and is expanding this capacity. The company currently produces 580 kilo tonnes and is working to double it, as part of its roadmap to support the new smelter.
Beyond production, Vedanta is planning an aluminium park in Jharsuguda, Odisha. The park is intended to host downstream manufacturers, creating an industrial ecosystem and encouraging investment in the region. These efforts align with Vedanta's broader strategy of strengthening its position in the domestic and global aluminium market.
ALUMEX India 2025, where Kumar shared these updates, is the country's first dedicated aluminium extrusion exhibition. The event is bringing together over 200 exhibitors and around 25,000 business visitors, covering the entire aluminium value chain.
