Synopsis

The Prayagraj Municipal Corporation (PMC) has intensified efforts to recover unpaid property taxes from defaulters, including more than 200 commercial establishments such as hotels, restaurants, and schools. These defaulters have avoided paying taxes for several years, leading to dues of nearly INR 40-50 crore. The PMC is planning property attachment actions to enforce payment and has set a collection target of INR 150 crore for the current financial year. Over INR 54 crore has already been collected from approximately one lakh property owners across the city.

The Prayagraj Municipal Corporation is taking strict measures to recover overdue property taxes from a large number of defaulters, particularly commercial establishments like hotels, restaurants, and educational institutions. These defaulters have not paid property taxes for several years, despite repeated notices from the corporation. The total unpaid amount is estimated to be between INR 40 crore and INR 50 crore.

The corporation has identified properties in prominent areas including Civil Lines, Katra, George Town, Mumfordganj, Sulemsarai, Phaphamau, and Teliarganj. The unpaid amounts differ widely, with some establishments owing as little as INR 2 lakh, while others have dues as high as INR 7?8 lakh.

To recover these dues, the PMC is preparing to attach properties of defaulters and has compiled a detailed list for this purpose. P.K. Mishra, the Chief Tax Assessment Officer of the PMC, highlighted that these establishments have used city services but failed to fulfill their tax obligations.

For the current financial year, the corporation has set a property tax collection target of INR 150 crore. So far, over INR 54 crore has been collected from roughly one lakh property owners. The city?s 80 older wards account for approximately 2.36 lakh properties, while the 20 newly added wards cover about 1.79 lakh properties. The PMC is focusing on collecting taxes from around 45,000 properties in these areas.

The PMC's enforcement actions aim to ensure compliance and recover long-standing dues, which are vital for the city's infrastructure and public services. By addressing chronic tax defaulters, the corporation is working to secure the funds needed for civic development and maintenance of essential amenities.
