In Kozhikode, the project remains in the planning phase, awaiting the preparation of a Detailed Project Report (DPR) as per national guidelines. Additionally, the second phase of the Kochi Metro, extending 11.2 km from Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium to Kakkanad Infopark via Smart City, is progressing, with no current plans for further expansion.
Kerala's Chief Minister Shri Pinarayi Vijayan, informed the assembly that Kochi Metro Rail Ltd. (KMRL) will be responsible for executing metro projects in Kozhikode and Thiruvananthapuram. This move follows the 2017 revised Metro Rail Policy, which requires a detailed project report (DPR) to be prepared and approved by the Union Government before implementation.
In Thiruvananthapuram, preliminary construction has already begun with the Sreekaryam flyover. KMRL has submitted several alignment options for the metro corridor. A secretary-level committee, led by the Chief Secretary, is reviewing these options to choose the route that offers maximum efficiency and benefits for commuters. The state government is considering KMRL's mobility plan and alternative analysis report, which will guide the preparation of the DPR and subsequent steps.
The Kozhikode metro project is currently in the planning stage under KMRL's supervision. The DPR will be developed following national policy standards, ensuring the project meets all regulatory and operational requirements before work commences.
The Chief Minister also highlighted the progress of the second phase of Kochi Metro. This 11.2 km extension from Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium to Kakkanad Infopark via Smart City is moving ahead, but there are no current plans to expand the network further. These developments indicate steady progress in Kerala's urban transport infrastructure, aimed at easing traffic congestion and enhancing connectivity across major cities.
