The projects form part of ongoing efforts to restore the Yamuna's health and improve water quality in the capital.
Union Home Minister Shri Amit Shah has inaugurated and laid foundation stones for several development projects worth INR 1,816 crore, focusing on rejuvenating the Yamuna River in Delhi. Chief Minister Smt Rekha Gupta highlighted that a significant portion of these projects is dedicated to cleaning the river and addressing the long-standing water and sewerage issues that contribute to its pollution.
The projects include constructing and upgrading sewage treatment plants (STPs) and sewer lines across the city. Twenty-two major drains are being equipped with these STPs to ensure untreated sewage does not flow into the river. Once operational, the treated water from these plants will enter the Yamuna, significantly reducing pollution levels and improving water quality.
Chief Minister Gupta emphasized that making the Yamuna pollution-free and revitalized has been a top priority for the Delhi government, reflecting promises made in the BJP's Assembly poll manifesto earlier this year. She appealed to citizens to actively participate in maintaining the river's cleanliness, stating that only through combined efforts of the government and residents can the Yamuna be restored to its pristine state.
These initiatives are part of a broader effort by the central and state governments to address environmental concerns and improve civic infrastructure in Delhi. They also align with ongoing missions to clean the Yamuna up to Prayagraj and eliminate landfill mounds in the city by 2028, reinforcing a sustained focus on environmental restoration and public health.
