The Telangana State Road Transport Corporation (TGSRTC) is preparing to build dedicated electric vehicle (EV) depots across Greater Hyderabad to support 2,800 electric buses over the next three years. Each depot will feature charging stations and high-tension power connections, with the total estimated cost of INR 392 crore. To fund the initiative, a green fee of INR 5-10 per ticket is being planned, expected to generate about INR 110 crore annually. Currently, TGSRTC operates 265 electric buses and plans to add 275 more soon. This transition aims to significantly reduce air and noise pollution in the city.
The Telangana State Road Transport Corporation (TGSRTC) has announced plans to establish multiple electric vehicle depots across Greater Hyderabad. These depots will support the deployment of 2,800 electric buses within the next three years. Each facility will be equipped with charging stations and high-tension (HT) power connections, with a total setup cost estimated at INR 392 crore.
At present, TGSRTC operates 265 electric buses in Hyderabad and expects to add another 275 in the coming months. The development of the depots, along with the required infrastructure, is projected to require investment running into several thousand crore rupees.
To help finance this project, TGSRTC intends to introduce a green fee ranging between INR 5-10 on bus tickets. Officials have mentioned that since nearly 75% of city bus passengers are women who travel free under the Mahalakshmi scheme, a significant portion of the fee's cost will be borne by the state government.
Each depot will require an HT connection costing around INR 10 crore. Currently, charging infrastructure is operational at select locations, including JBS, Cantonment, HCU, and Miyapur-2 depots. The initiative is part of Telangana's broader efforts to shift from diesel to electric buses, reducing daily carbon emissions and decreasing both air and noise pollution. Hyderabad presently has 2,926 diesel buses, each contributing about 2.15 kg of carbon emissions per day.
The introduction of these electric buses and depots is expected to strengthen the city's sustainable mobility infrastructure while easing the environmental impact of public transport.
