The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) has introduced the 'Mumbai One' app, India's first common mobility application integrating 11 public transport operators, including suburban railways, metro, monorail, and buses. The app enables commuters to travel across multiple transport modes using a single QR-based digital ticket. Offering features like real-time route updates, a journey planner, nearby station and attraction guides, and safety functions such as SOS and location sharing, the app promotes cashless, paperless travel. The initiative supports the Digital India vision and aims to simplify commuting across Mumbai.
The MMRDA has launched the 'Mumbai One' app, a first-of-its-kind common mobility platform for the Mumbai Metropolitan Region, integrating 11 public transport operators. The app allows commuters to use a single QR-based digital ticket for seamless travel across Mumbai Metro lines, Monorail, Suburban Railways, and bus services. By eliminating the need for multiple apps, separate bookings, and paper tickets, the app offers a convenient and eco-friendly commuting experience.
The app includes a tri-lingual interface in Hindi, Marathi, and English, along with safety features such as "Share My Location" and an Emergency Helpline. Its multimodal journey planner helps users identify the fastest and most cost-effective routes, while providing real-time information on service availability and advisories. Cashless and contactless transactions are supported via digital wallets or prepaid balances, aligning with Digital India objectives.
Mumbai One also serves as a guide for domestic and international tourists, highlighting key attractions, curated dining options, and cultural hubs across the city. It marks a significant milestone under the "Mumbai in Minutes" vision and sets a model for other Indian metro cities. The app consolidates services from 11 transport operators: Mumbai Suburban Railway, Metro Lines 1, 2A, 3, and 7, Navi Mumbai Metro, Monorail, BEST, Thane Municipal Transport, Mira Bhayander Municipal Transport, Kalyan-Dombivali Municipal Transport, and Navi Mumbai Municipal Transport. The initiative is fully funded by the MMRDA with no additional cost to users.
Key features of the app include quick booking of tickets, interactive map-based ticketing for Metro and Suburban Rail, and journey planning with a single dynamic QR code covering the entire trip. Users can also locate nearby bus stops, metro stations, and rail stations, as well as points of interest such as malls, gas stations, and tourist attractions. An SOS feature allows users to alert preselected contacts with their location in emergencies.
Technically, the app runs on a MeitY-compliant cloud using Google Cloud Platform and Kubernetes for scalability. The system is designed to support a daily transaction volume of 100,000-150,000 initially, with capacity to handle up to 5 million users and 5 million transactions daily. Security is ensured through PCI DSS compliance, encrypting payments and preventing fraud.
Mumbai One is expected to transform commuting in the metropolitan region, reduce reliance on cash and paper tickets, and provide a unified platform that connects multiple transport operators. The platform represents a strategic effort to make public transportation more efficient, accessible, and user-friendly.
