Maharashtra has approved land in Igatpuri, Nashik district, to build a new film city modeled on Mumbai's Goregaon Dadasaheb Phalke Chitranagri. The project will feature indoor studios, outdoor sets, and other facilities for movies and television production. The Maharashtra government has approved land for the development of a new film city in Igatpuri, a scenic hill town in Nashik district, approximately 150 km from Mumbai. The project is planned to follow the model of Mumbai's Dadasaheb Phalke Chitranagri, which includes indoor studios, outdoor sets, and other facilities required for film and television production. The decision to allocate land was taken during a meeting chaired by Deputy Chief Minister Shri Ajit Pawar, who also oversees finance and planning portfolios. Senior ministers Chhagan Bhujbal, in charge of food, civil supplies, and consumer protection, and Ashish Shelar, responsible for IT and cultural affairs, were also present. Pawar said the revenue department has been instructed to transfer the designated government land in Igatpuri to the cultural affairs department for the project.
Bhujbal highlighted that the proposed location in Igatpuri is naturally rich, picturesque, and well connected to Mumbai through the Balasaheb Thackeray Maharashtra Samruddhi Highway. He stated that a grand film city will soon be developed here, following the Goregaon Film City model, which has become a key hub for film and TV production in Mumbai.
The concept of a film hub in the Nashik region was first introduced under the Nashik Division Development Programme of 2009, with INR 10 crore sanctioned between 2009 and 2012 for preliminary development. A survey of 54.58 hectares of government land at Mundegaon village in Igatpuri taluka has been completed, and the Nashik district collector has forwarded a proposal to the revenue department to transfer the land to the cultural affairs department for the project.
A detailed feasibility study was conducted in collaboration with the Dadasaheb Phalke Film City Corporation and Mitcon, a technical consulting organization, and the report was submitted to the Maharashtra Film and Cultural Development Corporation. Pawar noted that KPMG has been appointed to analyze the report and provide a financial viability and gap analysis by the end of November, ensuring the project is both financially and operationally sound.
Cultural Affairs Minister Ashish Shelar confirmed his department's support for the project and stated that a project management consultant will be appointed to oversee the next stages of development. Nashik Divisional Commissioner Dr Praveen Gedam suggested adding an amusement park alongside the film city to increase its attraction for tourists and visitors, which could also provide additional employment and support the local economy.
The new film city in Igatpuri is expected to not only serve as a production hub but also boost the region's cultural and economic profile. It represents a strategic effort by the state government to expand Maharashtra's entertainment infrastructure beyond Mumbai, attracting film projects, tourism, and related industries to Nashik district.
