Sushant Surve, the third accused in the Thane Municipal Corporation bribery case, surrendered to the Maharashtra Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB), joining Deputy Municipal Commissioner Shankar Patole and private individual Omkar Gaikar in custody. The case revolves around allegations that Patole demanded a bribe of INR 50 lakh from real estate developer Abhijit Kadam to remove an encroachment. Kadam had already paid INR 10 lakh through Surve, and while attempting to hand over another INR 25 lakh to Gaikar, the ACB intervened. All three face charges under the Prevention of Corruption Act.
Sushant Surve, implicated in the ongoing bribery investigation involving the Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC), has surrendered to the Maharashtra Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB). A local court has remanded him in police custody until early next week. Surve joins Deputy Municipal Commissioner Shankar Patole and private individual Omkar Gaikar, who were earlier arrested during an ACB raid at the TMC headquarters.
The investigation centers on a complaint by real estate developer Abhijit Kadam, who holds development rights for a plot in Vishnu Nagar, Naupada. Kadam alleged that Patole, heading the TMC?s Encroachment Control and Eviction Department, demanded INR 50 lakh to remove an encroachment on his property. Kadam reportedly paid INR 10 lakh through Surve in early July.
The situation intensified when Kadam attempted to hand over an additional INR 25 lakh to Gaikar in Patole?s office at the civic headquarters. The ACB, monitoring the transaction, conducted a raid and arrested Patole and Gaikar on the spot. Surve, who had been evading arrest since the FIR was registered, later surrendered to the ACB.
All three accused are now facing charges under multiple sections of the Prevention of Corruption Act. Authorities are continuing their investigation to determine the full extent of the alleged bribery network within the municipal corporation.
