Bengaluru has made significant progress in road repairs, with over 13,000 potholes fixed and another 4,000-5,000 slated for phased repair, according to Deputy CM DK Shivakumar. Backed by a INR 750 crore fund, each repair is tracked with GPS, photos, and videos for transparency. Additionally, the government has rolled out an INR 1,100 crore plan to upgrade 550 km of arterial roads, including widening, junction concreting, and new construction, with provisions to manage traffic during works. A citizen app for pothole reporting and police support are also in place. The initiative follows criticism from residents and corporates like Infosys, Biocon, and BlackBuck, who flagged poor road conditions as a business challenge.
Bengaluru has made notable progress in repairing its road network, with over 13,000 potholes addressed so far. Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar, responsible for city development, inspected several ongoing repair sites and outlined plans for further improvements.
Officials reported that an additional 4,000-5,000 potholes identified across the city will be fixed in stages. The repairs are supported by an INR 750 crore fund provided by the Chief Minister, aimed at making all city roads motorable within a set timeframe. Shivakumar highlighted that each pothole repair is documented with GPS coordinates, photos, and videos, allowing for transparency and public verification.
Alongside repairs, the government has prepared an INR 1,100 crore action plan to upgrade 550 km of arterial roads. The plan covers new road construction, widening of existing roads, and concrete work at junctions, with measures being discussed to manage traffic during the construction period. Ward-level road development is also included, with funds allocated to MLAs' constituencies specifically for road improvement.
The administration has also introduced a public reporting system through an app, allowing citizens to report potholes directly. The police are also assisting in identifying problematic areas. Shivakumar noted that potholes are common in major cities, and Bengaluru's efforts represent a structured approach to tackling this challenge.
Road conditions in Bengaluru had drawn criticism from citizens, industry leaders, and companies, including Infosys and Biocon, who urged swift government action. The issue also affected businesses like BlackBuck, which cited road infrastructure challenges as a reason for relocating from Bellandur on the Outer Ring Road.
