Synopsis

Tata Power Renewable Energy Ltd (TPREL) has signed a Power Purchase Agreement with Tata Power Mumbai Distribution to develop an 80 MW Firm and Dispatchable Renewable Energy (FDRE) project with an estimated investment of INR 1,200 crore. The project, to be completed within 24 months, will integrate solar, wind, and battery storage systems to ensure reliable supply even during peak demand. Once operational, it is expected to generate around 315 million units annually, reduce over 0.25 million tonnes of carbon emissions, and meet renewable obligations while providing electricity to about 800,000 consumers across Mumbai.

Tata Power Renewable Energy Ltd (TPREL), a subsidiary of Tata Power, has entered into a Power Purchase Agreement with Tata Power Mumbai Distribution for setting up an 80 MW Firm and Dispatchable Renewable Energy (FDRE) project. The investment for this project is estimated at around INR 1,200 crore, and the execution period has been set at 24 months.

The FDRE model combines solar and wind generation with battery energy storage, allowing the facility to deliver power during periods of high demand. This design supports grid stability and ensures continuous supply. Tata Power has stated that the project is expected to generate nearly 315 million units of electricity every year. In addition, it is projected to cut down carbon dioxide emissions by more than 0.25 million tonnes annually, adding to the company's wider renewable goals.

A key feature of this initiative is the guarantee of supplying power for four hours during peak demand, with at least 90 percent assured availability. This is expected to directly support the rising energy requirements of Tata Power Mumbai Distribution's consumers. The project will also enable the distribution utility to meet its Renewable Purchase Obligation (RPO), as mandated by the State Electricity Regulatory Commission.

Once commissioned, the clean energy generated will be integrated into Tata Power's Mumbai distribution network. This will make it possible to deliver low-emission electricity to around 800,000 consumers, spanning residential, commercial, and industrial segments. The project is being seen as a step to both strengthen energy security in Mumbai and contribute towards cleaner supply.

With this new addition, TPREL's renewable utility capacity stands at 11.3 GW. Of this, around 9.4 GW falls under signed Power Purchase Agreements, while 5.6 GW is already operational, including 4.6 GW of solar and 1 GW of wind projects. Apart from utility-scale projects, the company's solar EPC portfolio has crossed 15.7 GW of ground-mounted capacity and over 3 GW of rooftop and distributed solar installations across the country.

In recent months, Mumbai has witnessed growing electricity demand, leading to approvals for additional supply arrangements by the state regulator. The new FDRE project is aligned with the need to strengthen clean energy availability while ensuring reliability during peak hours.
