Nine workers lost their lives when a steel arch collapsed at the Ennore SEZ Supercritical Thermal Power Project construction site in Ooranambedu, Thiruvallur district, near Chennai. The structure fell from a height of around 45 meters, leaving several others injured, with some in critical condition. The victims were primarily migrant workers from Assam and nearby states. Officials confirmed that one additional worker was seriously injured in the accident.
Dr. J. Radhakrishnan, secretary of the Tamil Nadu Electricity Board and chairman of Tamil Nadu Generation and Distribution Corporation (TANGEDCO), said that officials from Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL), the project contractor, were present at the site immediately after the collapse. Over ten workers were quickly shifted to Stanley Government Hospital in North Chennai for urgent medical care. The exact cause of the collapse remains under investigation, with police and safety inspectors conducting a detailed probe.
Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M. K. Stalin confirmed the deaths in a post on X and stated that all nine workers were from the eastern state of Assam. Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his sorrow in a post on X, saying he was saddened by the mishap due to the building collapse in Chennai. The Prime Minister also announced an ex gratia of INR 2 lakh from the Prime Minister's National Relief Fund for the families of each deceased worker, while the injured are set to receive INR 50,000. Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said his administration is coordinating with Tamil Nadu authorities for the prompt return of the deceased workers? bodies.
The incident has raised serious concerns about construction safety standards, particularly regarding temporary structures such as steel arches. Rescue teams acted immediately to manage the situation, highlighting the risks involved in high-rise construction work.
