Once fully operational, the airport will accommodate 90 million passengers annually and handle 3.2 million tonnes of cargo, establishing it as a major aviation hub in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region and Asia.

The Navi Mumbai International Airport is set to be inaugurated on October 8, following the approval of its aerodrome licence by the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA). The airport is being developed in multiple phases by Navi Mumbai International Airport Ltd, with the Adani Group holding a 74 per cent stake and the Maharashtra government's land development authority, CIDCO, owning the remaining 26 per cent.

Adani Group Chairman Gautam Adani recently visited the airport ahead of the inauguration and interacted with construction workers, engineers, women staff, artisans, fire fighters, guards, and differently-abled colleagues who contributed to the project. He described the airport as a creation of thousands of hands and emphasized that their efforts will be reflected in every flight and every passenger passing through its halls. He also shared a video of his visit and his interactions with the workforce.

This will be the second operational airport in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region and has been assigned the airport code 'NMI'. The development is planned in five phases. Once fully operational, the airport is expected to handle 90 million passengers and manage 3.2 million metric tonnes of cargo annually, making it one of the largest aviation hubs in Asia.

Currently, India has 162 operational airports, according to the civil aviation ministry, and the addition of Navi Mumbai International Airport is expected to enhance air connectivity in the region and ease pressure on existing airports.
