Synopsis

The Mattancherry Water Metro terminal in Kochi is scheduled for inauguration in the second week of October, fulfilling a long-standing demand of local residents. The project began in 2019 but faced significant delays due to a non-performing contractor and issues in connecting high-tension electricity to the terminal. Local authorities resumed work under a new contractor after public protests. Plans are also underway to introduce feeder bus services linking Mattancherry and Fort Kochi, improving accessibility for both tourists and residents.

The Mattancherry Water Metro terminal in Kochi is expected to be inaugurated in the second week of October, bringing a major boost to local connectivity and tourism. Initiated by Kochi Metro Rail Ltd (KMRL) in 2019, the terminal's construction faced delays when the original contractor failed to complete the work on time. The contract was later terminated and reassigned to a new contractor. Additional delays occurred due to challenges in providing high-tension electricity connectivity to the site.

Authorities are considering feeder bus services between Mattancherry and Fort Kochi to support both locals and tourists, as existing connectivity in the area remains limited. The inauguration date will also take into account the availability of the Chief Minister and other officials.

The terminal aims to improve access to Mattancherry, a heritage-rich area with significant tourist activity. The project's completion not only resolves a long-standing local demand but also strengthens Kochi's urban transportation network. With feeder services and better last-mile connectivity, the terminal is expected to make commuting easier and promote sustainable urban travel.
