Synopsis

Navi Mumbai International Airport has received its aerodrome licence from the Directorate General of Civil Aviation, enabling the project to move towards operational readiness. The licence was issued after the airport met regulatory and safety requirements. Developed by Adani Group and CIDCO in five phases, the airport's first stage is expected to serve 20 million passengers a year and handle 0.5 million metric tons of cargo. With this approval, NMIA becomes the second airport for the Mumbai Metropolitan Region, with inauguration expected soon.

The DGCA has formally approved the aerodrome licence for Navi Mumbai International Airport, giving the project the regulatory clearance required to start commercial operations. According to the airport operator, the licence was awarded after the facility met all prescribed safety and operational norms. This approval makes NMIA the second major airport for the Mumbai Metropolitan Region, expected to serve as a crucial gateway to address the growing demand for air travel and cargo movement.

The airport is being developed in partnership between Adani Group and Maharashtra's planning authority CIDCO, with the work structured across five phases. In its first phase, the facility is designed to manage 20 million passengers annually along with 0.5 million metric tons of cargo. Authorities have confirmed that the inauguration will take place shortly, with the Prime Minister scheduled to open the airport.

Over the years, the project faced several delays due to land acquisition challenges, rehabilitation concerns and environmental approvals. The concept of a second airport for Mumbai had been under discussion for more than a decade, largely because the existing Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport has been operating close to saturation. With this licence now granted, the long-pending plan to expand aviation capacity for the region is moving into its operational stage.

NMIA is positioned to enhance both regional and international air connectivity. The airport is expected to improve passenger experience while easing congestion at Mumbai's current airport. In addition to passenger traffic, the facility's cargo capacity aims to support trade growth by offering modern logistics infrastructure.
