Synopsis

The Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) recently carried out a demolition drive in the Belapur division against unauthorised construction after repeated notices were ignored. Acting under the directives of Municipal Commissioner Dr Kailas Shinde and senior civic officials, the encroachment department organised the action with full deployment of staff, machinery, and police support. Authorities confirmed that similar anti-encroachment operations will be intensified in the future.

The encroachment department of the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation initiated a demolition drive in the Belapur division earlier this week. Officials stated that despite prior notices, the concerned party failed to comply with the instructions and continued with the unauthorised construction. Acting on directives from Municipal Commissioner Dr Kailas Shinde, and under the guidance of Additional Commissioner (2) Dr Rahul Gethe and Deputy Commissioner (Encroachment) Dr Kailas Gaikwad, the department proceeded with the demolition.

The action was directed against an unauthorised structure belonging to Mrs Laxmi Kashinath Bose at house number 1215/02, Diwale village, Sector 14, Navi Mumbai. A notice under Section 54 of the MRTP Act had been served, requiring voluntary removal of the construction. However, as no steps were taken, the civic authorities organised a demolition drive at the site.

The operation was carried out by the Belapur divisional office with the support of Assistant Commissioner and Divisional Officer Dr Amol Palwe, Assistant Engineer Atmaram Kale, and other officials and staff from the encroachment department. A team comprising ten labourers, three hammers, one gas cutter, one poclain machine, as well as police personnel and security guards, was deployed to ensure smooth execution of the drive.

Officials confirmed that the civic body would continue to intensify such anti-encroachment actions across the city to curb unauthorised developments.

The recent demolition drive in Belapur underscores the Navi Mumbai civic body's strict approach towards tackling unauthorised construction. Despite issuing prior notices, when compliance was ignored, the administration took firm action with the support of senior officials, staff, and law enforcement. Authorities emphasised that similar operations will be carried out with greater intensity in the coming period to maintain urban order and discourage encroachments.
