Synopsis

Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC), recognised under the Super Swachh League, has entered into a partnership with five municipal councils in Maharashtra to extend guidance on urban cleanliness. The collaboration, formed under the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs' Swachh Bharat Mission, is aimed at strengthening inter-city cooperation on sanitation practices. Officials confirmed that the initiative would be result-oriented, with its impact assessed during the forthcoming Swachh Survekshan 2025-26.

Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) has been selected to mentor five municipal council cities in Maharashtra under the nationwide 'Swachh City Pairing' initiative. The project, launched in New Delhi under the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs as part of the Swachh Bharat Mission, seeks to accelerate cleanliness across Indian cities through structured inter-city collaboration.

A total of 72 cities across the country have been chosen to guide 196 others. Navi Mumbai, which has already secured its position in the 'Super Swachh League' category of Swachh Survekshan 2024, has been paired with Lonavar, Kej, Malkapur, Jintur and Kannad municipal councils. These include two cities from Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar district, one from Parbhani and two from Buldhana.

Municipal Commissioner Dr Kailas Shinde assured, during a prior digital interaction with the chief officers of the five councils, that NMMC would provide full support and mentorship. The formal agreement was finalised in the presence of Additional Commissioner Sunil Pawar, Deputy Commissioner of Solid Waste Management Dr Ajay Gadade and senior officials of the respective councils.

The initiative, implemented during the 'Swachhata Hi Seva' campaign, is designed as a time-bound and result-oriented programme. It focuses on eight key areas including visible cleanliness, waste segregation and transport, solid waste processing, sanitation access, sewage management, mechanisation of services, welfare of sanitation workers, citizen participation and grievance redressal systems. By collaborating with NMMC, the five councils are expected to improve their low Swachh Survekshan rankings. The evaluation of this mentoring will be conducted during the Swachh Survekshan 2025-26 assessment.

Commissioner Dr Shinde remarked that the inclusion of NMMC in the Super Swachh League and its role as a mentor city under this initiative was a matter of pride for the citizens of Navi Mumbai. He stated that this recognition further reinforced the city's reputation as a leader in urban cleanliness.

Through its selection as a mentor under the Swachh City Pairing programme, Navi Mumbai has assumed an important role in shaping sanitation improvements across five smaller Maharashtra cities. By focusing on solid waste management, sewage treatment, citizen engagement and service mechanisation, the collaboration is expected to raise their Swachh Survekshan performance. For Navi Mumbai, the initiative also cements its standing as a benchmark city in cleanliness and community-driven urban development.
