The government has rolled out an upgraded version of its logistics data bank, allowing real-time tracking of export containers at sea and domestic trucks on road and rail networks. Developed by NICDC Logistics Data Services (NLDSL), the system integrates multiple transport modes, providing a live container heatmap and multi-modal visibility. Officials say this will improve supply chain efficiency, reduce logistics costs, and enhance India's competitiveness in global trade. The upgrade complements ongoing initiatives, including the development of 12 industrial cities across ten states with planned investments of INR 28,602 crore.
The government has introduced an enhanced version of its logistics data bank, which now allows exporters and industry stakeholders to track containers in real time even after they leave Indian ports. The system also provides live tracking of trucks moving on domestic roads and rail networks. Officials noted that this upgraded platform aims to improve planning, coordination, and efficiency in supply chains while reducing logistics costs for exporters and transport operators.
This system has been developed by NICDC Logistics Data Services (NLDSL) and combines multiple transport modes, including road, rail, and sea. It uses container numbers, truck or trailer identifiers, and railway freight numbers to provide end-to-end visibility. A live container heatmap shows the distribution of containers across the country, helping policymakers and industry players identify congestion points and respond more effectively.
According to NLDSL CEO and Managing Director Rajat Kumar Saini, the upgraded data bank also allows exporters to track containers during high-sea voyages, a capability that was limited in the previous version. The system provides continuous insights into logistics performance and supports better operational planning. Officials also highlighted that the platform helps monitor trucks' adherence to regulatory norms, improving overall compliance and transparency in transport operations.
In addition to this technological upgrade, progress is ongoing on the government's plan to develop 12 new industrial cities across ten states. Saini noted that work is advancing steadily, with 11 out of 12 locations expected to begin construction soon. The Union Cabinet had earlier approved these industrial cities, which are part of six major industrial corridors, with a total planned investment of INR 28,602 crore.
Previously, India's logistics data system tracked containers only until they departed Indian ports, limiting visibility for exporters. The upgraded data bank now bridges this gap, providing a comprehensive, multi-modal view of logistics movements, both within India and overseas, which is expected to streamline operations and enhance the country's export efficiency.
