The Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) has decided to extend its property tax amnesty scheme, SUNIYO 2025-26, by three more months until the end of December. While the extension gives taxpayers extra time, a 2 % late fee on the principal tax will apply for payments made from October onwards. Since its launch in June, the scheme has seen strong participation, with 1.16 lakh property owners contributing INR 370.27 crore, including more than 65,800 first-time taxpayers. Overall, the civic body's property tax collection this year has crossed INR 2,111.63 crore, showing notable growth over last year.
The MCD has given property owners additional time to settle their dues under the SUNIYO 2025-26 property tax amnesty scheme. Initially scheduled to close in late September, the scheme will now continue until December 31. However, officials have introduced a new condition for this extended period: taxpayers making payments between October 1 and December 31 will have to pay a late fee of 2 % on the principal tax amount. All other rules and benefits of the scheme remain unchanged.
The scheme, which began on June 1, was designed to encourage wider tax compliance. Since then, it has received participation from around 1.16 lakh taxpayers, generating INR 370.27 crore in collections. Out of these, 65,874 taxpayers were new to the system, adding INR 187.8 crore to the total. Officials highlighted that such participation from first-time payers indicates the scheme's effectiveness in bringing previously non-compliant property owners into the tax net.
This year, the overall property tax collection of the civic body has already touched INR 2,111.63 crore, coming from 11.63 lakh taxpayers. The collections reflect a 22.5 % increase in revenue and an 18 % rise in taxpayer numbers compared with the same period last year.
MCD has a history of offering amnesty and rebate programmes to improve tax compliance, but response has often varied. The latest figures suggest that the current scheme is performing better than earlier attempts, particularly in attracting first-time taxpayers. Officials believe the extension, even with the late fee clause, will allow more residents to take advantage of the scheme while ensuring some degree of accountability for delayed payments.
