The Coimbatore Corporation has set up a rainwater reuse system at its Town Hall that stores about 108,000 litres through 40 collection points across a built-up area of 25,000 sq ft. With a European filtration unit and a removable stainless-steel dirt basket, the facility supplies more than 8,000 litres daily and can last for nearly ten weeks. After strong September showers almost filled the tanks, plans are underway to add a second 100,000-litre tank and extend the model to all five zonal offices. Officials confirmed Coimbatore is the only city in the state to introduce such a rainwater reuse facility in a government building.
The Coimbatore City Municipal Corporation has set up a rainwater reuse system at its Town Hall building, making it one of the first government offices in the state to adopt such a model. Unlike conventional structures that only focus on groundwater recharge, this facility also ensures direct reuse of harvested rainwater.
Installed in July, the system has already proven effective. Following a weak monsoon in August, rainfall during September almost filled the storage tanks, demonstrating the usefulness of the design. The project is seen as a significant step in addressing the city's growing demand for water while also managing excess rainwater.
Corporation Commissioner M. Sivaguru Prabakaran explained that the system has a storage capacity of 108,000 litres, supported by a European-made filtration unit. Rainwater is collected from 40 inlet points covering around 25,000 sq ft of built-up space. The stored water is adequate for nearly ten weeks, meeting non-potable needs such as cleaning and sanitation at the premises. To strengthen the facility further, the civic body has planned an additional ground-level tank with a capacity of 100,000 litres alongside the existing unit.
Encouraged by the results, the corporation now plans to replicate the system at all five zonal offices. The idea is to reduce reliance on borewell water, particularly in monsoon periods when groundwater levels are already high. This not only helps in reusing rainwater effectively but also prevents situations where excess water flows into storm drains that eventually feed into the Noyyal river. Officials highlighted that Coimbatore is currently the only city in Tamil Nadu to implement a rainwater reuse model of this kind in a government building.
The initiative has drawn attention as a practical and sustainable approach to urban water management. By combining storage, reuse, and recharge within the same system, the model is being seen as an example that other civic bodies across the state could follow.
