Chennai's new multi-modal transport app, Chennai One, has launched to unify the city's public transport, including buses, metro lines, and suburban trains, into a single platform. Within the first 24 hours, it recorded over 1.3 lakh downloads and more than 4,000 ticket bookings. Developed by the Chennai Unified Metropolitan Transport Authority (CUMTA), the app provides cashless ticketing via UPI, GPS-based vehicle tracking, and a single QR code for all transport modes. Initial feedback highlights areas for improvement, including last-mile connectivity and system integration.
Chennai has introduced the "Chennai One" app to simplify urban commuting by integrating the city's major transport networks into a single platform. Designed by the Chennai Unified Metropolitan Transport Authority (CUMTA), the app covers 621 MTC bus routes with 3,436 buses, three suburban and MRTS railway lines, and two metro corridors.
The app recorded 1.3 lakh downloads and 4,394 ticket bookings within the first 24 hours. MTC buses accounted for the majority of bookings at 53%, suburban and MRTS trains 25%, and metro services 22%. Namma Yatri autos are also included, with over one lakh drivers registered.
Chennai One runs on GPS technology similar to Uber and Rapido, tracking both users and vehicles in real time. It displays live routes, schedules, and nearest stops, while enabling cashless payments through UPI. Tickets are valid for the entire day, and the app offers multi-route trip suggestions, next-vehicle updates, and highlights key city destinations with images. Tickets currently need to be booked separately for each mode of travel.
The app was developed at a cost of INR 8 crore (approximately USD 1 million) and is maintained under a five-year contract by Bengaluru-based Moving Tech Innovations Private Limited, which operates the Namma Yatri platform.
