Synopsis

The Union government has leased 53.17 acres of salt pan land to the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) on a 99-year lease worth INR 12.9 crore for the Dahisar-Bhayandar Link Road (DBLR). This 5 km elevated stretch, running from Dahisar West to Bhayandar West, will close a critical connectivity gap between Nariman Point and Mira Bhayandar. Larsen & Toubro secured the INR 3,304 crore construction contract, and the project is expected to be completed within three years, significantly easing traffic and shortening commute times.

The Union government has transferred 53.17 acres of salt pan land to the BMC on a 99-year lease valued at INR 12.9 crore. This step clears a major obstacle in the construction of the Dahisar-Bhayandar Link Road, aimed at improving connectivity between Dahisar West and Bhayandar West.

The 5 km elevated road will begin near Kandarpada metro station in Dahisar West and extend to Uttan Road near Subhash Chandra Bose Maidan in Bhayandar West. Of this stretch, 1.5 km falls under BMC?s jurisdiction, while 3.5 km is managed by the Mira Bhayandar Municipal Corporation. The missing section of the current network will pass through Vasai creek, adjacent mangrove areas, and the newly leased salt pan land.

A notice from the Salt Commissioner earlier this year confirmed the land?s 99-year lease for INR 12.9 crore. The ministry clarified that any legal issues related to compensation or other matters will be handled by the BMC and that the land must only be used for the DBLR. Transfer of ownership to any other entity, even for the same purpose, is prohibited.

Bidding for the project began in October 2022, with Larsen & Toubro winning the tender in July 2024 for INR 3,304 crore. Completion of the DBLR is expected within three years, offering a direct, faster route and addressing longstanding connectivity challenges in northern Mumbai suburbs.
