The Surat Urban Development Authority (SUDA), in collaboration with the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), has reviewed five innovative town-planning schemes designed for the upcoming bullet train station area. Two schemes have already been cleared at the draft stage by the state, and one has been filed as a preliminary plan. The remaining proposals highlight features such as green corridors, non-motorised transport, lakefront development, central plazas, and MICE facilities, reflecting a push towards modern, sustainable and pedestrian-friendly urban design.
The Surat Urban Development Authority (SUDA), working alongside the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), has been advancing town-planning schemes to guide development around Surat's forthcoming bullet train station. A total of five schemes-TP schemes 61, 62-A, 62-B, 62-C, and 63-have been prepared with joint inputs from central and state authorities and supported by JICA's expertise. Out of these, TP schemes 61 and 63 have already received draft approval from the state government, while TP scheme 61 (covering Kosmada-Oviyan-Chedcha) has also been submitted as a Preliminary Town Planning Scheme.
The three other schemes integrate contemporary planning concepts not previously seen in such projects in India. These include the creation of central plazas, green corridors, non-motorised transport systems, a lakefront development, and facilities for meetings, incentives, conferences, and exhibitions (MICE). The designs emphasise improved environmental quality, ease of pedestrian movement, and the shaping of the station precinct into a mixed-use destination.
The bullet train station itself is being developed near Antroli, situated between National Highway 48 and Surat's existing urban stretch. The town-planning proposals are intended to ensure that the precinct evolves as a well-connected and sustainable extension of the city's growth corridor.
With approvals already secured for some schemes and innovative design concepts embedded into others, Surat's bullet train station precinct is positioned to become more than just a transit facility. Once implemented, the schemes are expected to deliver a walkable, environmentally sensitive, and multifunctional urban environment that can serve as a model for other fast-growing cities in the country.
