The Noida International Airport at Jewar, Uttar Pradesh, will be inaugurated on October 30, with passenger flights expected to start around mid-December. In the first phase, airlines are likely to connect the airport to at least ten cities including Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Mumbai, and Kolkata. Developed by Yamuna International Airport Private Limited, a Zurich Airport subsidiary, the new facility is expected to handle 12 million passengers annually and provide cargo connectivity. The airport will complement Delhi's IGI Airport and serve passengers from western Uttar Pradesh, Noida, and Greater Noida.
Union Civil Aviation Minister Kinjarapu Rammohan Naidu has confirmed that the Noida International Airport in Jewar, Uttar Pradesh, will be inaugurated on October 30, with commercial flight operations expected to commence within 45 days of the opening. Located about 60 km from Noida, the new airport will serve travellers from western Uttar Pradesh, Noida, and Greater Noida while easing traffic from Delhi's Indira Gandhi International Airport.
The Minister stated that airlines see strong potential for operations from the new hub and that, in the initial phase, at least ten destinations will be connected. These include major metro cities such as Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Mumbai, and Kolkata. Talks are underway with carriers, including IndiGo, to finalise the first set of routes.
Naidu added that the Ministry of Civil Aviation is working on a broader plan to bring all airports in the country to international standards. Free WiFi for domestic and international passengers is expected to be rolled out in the next two months, along with facilities such as free libraries and dedicated children's zones at airports.
Christoph Schnellmann, CEO of Yamuna International Airport Private Limited (YIAPL), a subsidiary of Zurich Airport developing the project, said the airport will blend Indian hospitality with Swiss efficiency. He said the design draws inspiration from western Uttar Pradesh, with elements reflecting the region's art, architecture, and culture. Features such as Raj ki Galiyan will showcase vegetarian cuisine from Vrindavan and Mathura, while traditional artwork, lattice screens, and local granite will be used in construction.
The Jewar airport project has been under development for several years. The concession agreement was signed in October 2020, and Tata Projects was awarded the construction contract in June 2022. In its first phase, the airport will operate one runway and is projected to handle up to 12 million passengers annually. Alongside passenger operations, the facility is also being planned as a key cargo hub, with connectivity to support regional industries and recently announced semiconductor manufacturing projects in the area.
At present, Delhi's IGI Airport remains the main gateway for NCR passengers, while Hindon Airport in Ghaziabad has been operational for domestic flights since 2019. Naidu also acknowledged recent disruptions at Hindon Airport, including delays and cancellations. He said the central government has requested 9 acres of land from the state to expand the terminal building and is also in talks with the Indian Air Force to increase aircraft parking capacity at the base.
