Synopsis

The Pune Municipal Corporation has now made it mandatory to display project names residential or commercial in Marathi. This directive came after a strong push from the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena, which had earlier flagged widespread non-compliance. The municipal commissioner issued a circular enforcing this rule across both ongoing and new projects, aligning with the state's Marathi language policy. Civic officials will be inspecting sites to ensure full compliance. With building approvals having tripled over recent years, this move seeks to balance rapid urban growth with cultural preservation. Builders must now comply or risk delays in project certifications.

The municipal leadership in Pune has taken a firm step to ensure Marathi's visibility in the city's urban landscape by mandating that names of residential and commercial projects appear in Marathi. A formal circular issued by the PMC commissioner emphasized that, given Marathi's classical-language status, all projects under the corporation's jurisdiction must feature clear and prominent Marathi signboards.

This directive follows earlier demands from the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena. With the new circular in place, compliance has become compulsory. A team of civic officials will visit project sites to verify that names are displayed in Marathi as required.

The number of building permissions in Pune has surged from 956 one year, to 1,709 in the next, and then soaring to 3,359 in the latest fiscal cycle. As urban development gains pace, ensuring cultural identity remains intact appears to be gaining precedence.
