Ahmedabad civic body proposes major road expansions impacting residential properties

Synopsis

Earlier this week, the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation revealed plans to widen and open more than two hundred roads across the city, affecting approximately 8 767 properties. Works are set to commence in the coming days on just over one hundred roads spread across five zones. It was stated that residents possessing proof of occupancy before 2010 would receive alternative arrangements, while legally acquired properties would be compensated. Those residing in unauthorised structures were informed that no compensation would be awarded.

The Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation is reported to have announced an ambitious infrastructure initiative, indicating that over two hundred roads will be subject to widening or opening across the city. Work on 103 roads in five distinct zones is due to begin in the near future. It was conveyed that alternate housing arrangements would be made available only for those residents who are able to demonstrate residence prior to 2010.


Further details were provided regarding the estimated spread of the projects: In the North-West Zone, 33 roads will affect around 994 properties; in the Central Zone, six roads impacting approximately 133 properties; in the South-West Zone, 14 roads affecting about 512 properties; in the West Zone, 27 roads impacting nearly 1 429 properties; and in the North Zone, 23 roads set to affect around 1 475 properties. It was noted that in the western part of the city alone, a total of 74 roads across three zones are expected to impact roughly 2 981 properties. Altogether, it was emphasised, approximately 8 767 properties stand to be affected.

It was clarified that widening decisions stem from town-planning schemes and are typically revisited every decade to align with city development plans. Heightened traffic was cited as necessitating amendments, with state government approval required for such expansions. Officials indicated that compensation will be furnished to owners of legally acquired properties, whereas those in unlawful or unauthorised dwellings will not be eligible.

It was emphasised that proof of residence before 2010 will be essential to qualify for relocation accommodations, signalling a commitment to fairness while preserving planning integrity. The announcement was positioned as a significant step toward enhancing Ahmedabad's road network, aiming to meet rising traffic demands while mitigating disruption to rightful residents.
