Property tax collections in Gurugram have reached nearly three-quarters of the annual target, while Manesar has already surpassed last year's revenue, thanks to an AI-powered tax system. The technology uses generative AI chatbots to engage taxpayers, identify reasons for non-payment, and categorise them for tailored follow-up-ranging from quick reminders to solutions for genuine challenges. Piloted in Yamunanagar, the system has boosted payments and reduced staff workload. Officials credit it with improving efficiency, while residents urge that the extra revenue be channelled into better amenities, infrastructure upgrades, and stronger public services to address urban needs alongside financial gains.
Earlier this week, officials from the Municipal Corporation of Gurugram confirmed that the city's property tax collection had reached close to three-quarters of its set annual target. At the same time, the Manesar civic council stated that it had already exceeded its entire previous year's revenue figures. Both authorities credited this sharp improvement to the adoption of an AI-powered property tax system.
According to officials, the technology-featuring generative AI chat-bots-works by engaging with taxpayers directly, identifying those who have outstanding dues, and determining the reasons behind delayed or missed payments. The system then categorises individuals into groups: those willing to pay soon, those facing genuine challenges, and those outright refusing. Each group receives tailored follow-up, with solutions provided to address payment hurdles.
The AI system was initially piloted in Yamunanagar, where it reportedly delivered encouraging results, prompting its rollout in Gurugram and Manesar. Officials observed that in most cases, once contacted through the system, property owners proceeded to clear their dues promptly. The approach, they noted, has not only improved revenue but also reduced manual workload for municipal staff.
While civic bodies see this as a major administrative success, local residents have stressed that the additional revenue must be utilised effectively. They expressed concerns about gaps in manpower and infrastructure, urging that funds be invested in upgrading basic amenities, improving public services, and strengthening urban facilities.
