The municipal corporation in Ranchi has initiated a land demarcation and survey campaign aimed at tackling unauthorised encroachments on its properties. The commissioner stated that this move follows recent findings through drone surveillance, which uncovered multiple cases of illegal occupation on civic land. Officials explained that the purpose of this exercise is to identify unutilised plots, reclaim encroached land, and use some of these areas for civic infrastructure such as parks, toilets, and community spaces. Signage and fencing will be introduced to prevent further unauthorised usage.
In a bid to address the growing issue of land encroachment, Ranchi Municipal Corporation has commenced a comprehensive survey and boundary demarcation of land owned by the civic body. The municipal commissioner explained that the objective of this drive is to protect and properly manage the corporation's real estate assets. He added that the encroachments, once identified, would be cleared and the plots either protected or put to appropriate public use. He clarified that while some portions of reclaimed land may be repurposed to develop parks for children, women's training centres, or public toilets, other plots would be secured with fencing and display boards indicating civic ownership.
According to the deputy commissioner, the survey will be conducted across different wards of the city to compile a comprehensive record of municipal land. Officials involved in the initiative confirmed that the survey teams would operate with coordination from revenue and planning departments. This collaborative approach is intended to ensure that each plot is correctly mapped, demarcated, and classified according to its intended future use.
As part of this enforcement and protection measure, the civic body is also set to install permanent signboards on each identified plot. These will state clearly that the land belongs to the municipal corporation and that any private construction or occupation is unauthorised and liable for action.
By combining technological surveillance with field surveys and inter-departmental cooperation, the municipal body has laid the groundwork for a more robust land management strategy. This approach not only aims to recover encroached plots but also focuses on transforming vacant municipal land into beneficial public amenities.
