Synopsis

The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) has intensified its crackdown on unauthorised constructions across the city following directives from the Telangana High Court. In recent months, the civic body has issued over 1,500 show-cause notices and demolished more than 200 illegal structures while sealing close to 100 buildings. Major violations include unauthorised floors, deviation from sanctioned plans, and construction without permission, with high-profile localities such as Banjara Hills and Jubilee Hills witnessing the most infractions. Officials have been instructed to seal illegal floors immediately after notices are served.

The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation has taken robust action against illegal constructions across the city, following pointed instructions from the Telangana High Court issued earlier this week. In response to judicial criticism regarding lax enforcement, GHMC officials have accelerated measures to identify and penalise property violations.

Since the start of the year, municipal authorities have uncovered approximately 1,538 cases of unauthorised construction activity. These cases have resulted in the issuance of an almost equal number of show-cause notices, over 200 demolitions, and around 93 building seals.

Civic officials reported that property owners had been flagrantly breaching approved building plans. In numerous instances, permissions granted for two or three floors had been flouted, with buildings rising to seven or eight storeys without the necessary approvals. These violations have been particularly prevalent in affluent localities such as Banjara Hills, Jubilee Hills, Film Nagar, and Shaikpet, as well as in commercial and residential pockets of KPHB, Moosapet, and Malakpet.

A senior official from GHMC's town planning department stated that the majority of infractions pertained to additional unapproved floors, unauthorised constructions without official sanction, significant deviations from approved plans, encroachments, and failure to maintain legally required setbacks.

The High Court observed that the civic body had been issuing notices for such violations for some time but was not following through with timely enforcement. The court directed GHMC to immediately seal illegal floors upon issuing notices to ensure quicker compliance and deter further breaches.

These judicial directions appear to have triggered the latest surge in enforcement activity, aimed at bringing unlawful developments under control.
