Visakhapatnam is set to witness significant growth in its information technology sector, as five companies, including Sify and Phenom People, have committed to establishing data centre operations in the city. The Andhra Pradesh government, earlier this week, approved land allotments for these companies, which have proposed a collective investment of INR 19,000 crore. These projects are expected to generate large-scale employment opportunities, positioning Visakhapatnam as a key player in India's digital infrastructure ecosystem. Authorities consider this initiative a pivotal step towards expanding the state's digital economy and supporting the broader vision of a technology-driven urban landscape.
In a development that could substantially enhance Visakhapatnam's IT landscape, the Andhra Pradesh government has cleared land allotments for five prominent technology firms planning to establish data centres in the city. Among the companies approved for the initiative are Sify Technologies, Phenom People, Pulsus, Lyfius Pharma, and another enterprise with diversified operations. The collective investment proposed by these firms stands at INR 19,000 crore.
Government officials noted that the allotment was part of a broader strategy to decentralise IT growth and strengthen tier-2 cities as competitive technology destinations. It was also indicated that the upcoming facilities would result in the creation of several thousand direct and indirect employment opportunities in the region. These projects are aimed not only at expanding the digital backbone of the state but also at boosting auxiliary services such as construction, logistics, and urban services.
With Visakhapatnam already being positioned as the executive capital of Andhra Pradesh, this latest investment drive is expected to accelerate its transformation into a technology-driven city. The government has expressed confidence that such large-scale infrastructure and data-driven projects will bolster the state's economic indicators, attract further private investments, and encourage talent retention within Andhra Pradesh.
As job creation, infrastructure enhancement, and digital capability building converge, the city is set to attract further industrial interest and investment. This approach not only reaffirms the government's intent to promote decentralised technological development but also places Visakhapatnam in a stronger position to compete with established IT corridors. If executed as planned, this initiative could serve as a model for similar growth across other emerging urban centres in India.
