Synopsis

In an effort to prevent structural mishaps during the monsoon, Jaipur's municipal bodies initiated the demolition of nine buildings deemed critically unsafe. The civic action, which took place earlier this week, followed repeated notices to property owners who failed to respond. A broader inspection of the city revealed widespread civic issues such as blocked drains, encroachments, and deteriorating infrastructure. The authorities are now focused on sealing, vacating, or removing dangerous buildings, while also addressing sanitation and public safety concerns across key city zones in both Jaipur Heritage and Greater areas.

Municipal authorities in Jaipur, covering both the Heritage and Greater zones, demolished nine buildings earlier this week after they were declared structurally unsafe. The move came as part of the city's preventive action ahead of the monsoon, which typically raises the risk of building collapses.

The Jaipur Heritage Municipal Corporation took action in areas like Tripolia Bazaar and Khejron Ka Rasta, while the Greater zone teams used bulldozers to raze dilapidated structures in Mansarovar. Officials said these properties had long posed a threat to public safety and could no longer be ignored.

According to civic engineers and zonal officers, the Heritage zone alone had listed over 100 buildings as structurally compromised, of which at least 46 were considered critically dangerous. Many of these structures housed longstanding tenants, making repair work difficult due to ownership and occupancy disputes.

Authorities stated that multiple warnings and notices had been issued to owners over the past few months, but the lack of compliance forced the municipality to act unilaterally in the interest of public safety. A similar list has been prepared in the Greater zone, where notices have already been dispatched.

In parallel with the demolition drive, a surprise inspection led by senior officials from the Local Self Government department was carried out across several prominent locations, including MI Road, Statue Circle, Vaishali Nagar, and parts of the Walled City. The inspection uncovered extensive civic mismanagement, including clogged drains, encroachments on footpaths, illegal street vending, poor waste management, and unattended unsafe buildings.

Principal Secretary Ravi Jain directed local bodies to clean stormwater drains urgently, ensure waste bins were placed outside all commercial establishments, and initiate legal proceedings or demolition orders against properties posing imminent danger.

The campaign is expected to continue throughout the monsoon season, with a focus on both safety enforcement and civic cleanliness.
